چکیده

In this paper, we propose a generalized framework for modeling the behavior of prominent congestioncontrol protocols. Specifically, we define a general class of loss-based congestion-control (LB-CC) mechanisms and demonstrate that many variants of TCP, including those being proposed for high-speed networks, belong to this class. Second, we develop a stochastic model to predict the transfer time for bulk transmissions by any protocol belonging to the LB-CC class—our model predicts both the mean as well as the variability in the transfer time. Our model is applicable to a wide set of transfer types and network capacities. We validate our model through extensive simulations under controlled settings, as well as with comprehensive HTTP workloads. We use our empirical analysis to also provide insights into several important issues, including: (i) identifying the settings under which previously-proposed TCP models are accurate, and (ii) identifying the conditions under which only steady-state analysis can be sufficient in modeling transfer performance. Our generalized framework provides a powerful tool that can be used in the design, analysis, and comparison of next-generation transport protocols. We demonstrate this benefit by comparing prominent TCP proposals for high-speed networks. 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Asymptotic Behavior of a Generalized Tcp Congestion Avoidance Algorithm

The transmission control protocol (TCP) is a transport protocol used in the Internet. In Ott (2005), a more general class of candidate transport protocols called ‘protocols in the TCP paradigm’ was introduced. The long-term objective of studying this class is to find protocols with promising performance characteristics. In this paper we study Markov chain models derived from protocols in the TC...

Model-driven Delay-based Congestion Control for Cellular Networks

Delay-based congestion control protocols appear to respond more efficiently to the unique properties of cellular networks compared to loss-based protocols. Unfortunately, delay-based congestion control protocols are often hard to understand and interpret by protocol designers due to their non-linear nature. As a result, existing models tend to include many oversimplifications and assumptions th...

Congestion Control Approaches Applied to Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a specific category of wireless ad-hoc networks where their performance is highly affected by application, life time, storage capacity, processing power, topology changes, the communication medium and bandwidth. These limitations necessitate an effective data transport control in WSNs considering quality of service, energy efficiency, and congestion control. ...

A stochastic model for short-lived TCP flows

In this paper, we propose a new model for the slowstart phase based on the discrete evolutions on the congestion window, and we use this slow-start model together with our improved TCP steady-state model to develop an extensive stochastic model which can more accurately predict the throughput and latency of short-lived TCP connections as functions of loss rate, round-trip time (RTT), and file s...

Analytical modeling of Transmission Control Protocol NewReno using Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets

This paper presents a novel analytical model of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) using a generalized stochastic Petri net (GSPN). Extensive simulation work has been done for the performance evaluation of TCP NewReno protocol. In view of the limitations of the simulation technique, we present an analytical approach using GSPN. A GSPN is a useful mathematical tool that solves continuous time M...
